Concurrent Workshop 2

The Use of Art Therapy in Social Work

Ms Lim Wee Kuan, Social Worker

Art Therapy is based on the belief that the creative process of art-making is healing and life enhancing, and is a form of nonverbal communication of thoughts and feelings. The art space, art medium and art process are important elements in art therapy. Each of these elements possesses therapeutic potential to support or bring about the desired therapeutic goals.

Art Therapy is used in a wide variety of settings and a modality to help individuals create meaning and achieve insight, find relief from overwhelming emotions or trauma, resolve conflicts and problems, and achieve a sense of well-being.

For art therapists, art is a modality that is central to their work and the basis of their worldview of therapy. For the other helping professionals art expression maybe a useful tool that is used as an adjunct to verbal therapy.

This one-hour workshop provides participants a glimpse of art therapy through an experiential activity and short presentation on the principles and application of art therapy.
